MOUNT VERNON, Iowa – The Nebraska Wesleyan women's soccer team ended the regular season with a 2-1 victory over Cornell College on Sunday afternoon in a NCAA III non-conference match.
Natalie Graves got the game-winning goal with just over six minutes remaining in the match to break the tie match and put NWU ahead 2-1. The Prairie Wolves defense was able to keep the Rams out of the goal as they sealed the 2-1 victory.
With the win, NWU finishes the regular season with a 7-10-1 overall while Cornell falls to 3-14.
The Prairie Wolves came out early to get on the scoreboard right away.
Hallie Schimenti scored on a penalty kick to give the Prairie Wolves the 1-0 early advantage. That 1-0 lead held up through halftime as the teams when to the locker room with NWU leading.
Cornell was able to tie the match late in the 2
nd half as Deidre Franzen scored her 14
th goal of the year in the 76
th minute. Just seven minutes later was when Graves would get the game-winning goal on an assist from
Jenna Schroeder.
NWU had just eight shot attempts, compared to 11 for the Rams but NWU took advantage of their opportunities.
Now the Prairie Wolves must wait to see if they earn a spot in the 2016 Iowa Conference Postseason Tournament. The IIAC regular season ends on Tuesday (Oct. 25) and NWU needs Coe College to tie or defeat the University of Dubuque to earn the final spot. A UD victory would put the Prairie Wolves on the outside looking in and end the 2016 season.
