LINCOLN, Neb. -- Playing in front of their home crowd, the Nebraska Wesleyan men's soccer team had an explosive second half to come away with a 4-2 victory over Simpson College on Wednesday night at Abel Stadium.
NWU scored all four goals in the second half to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and earn their sixth victory in as many matches this season to improve to 6-0 overall.
Things didn't look promising early for the Prairie Wolves as Simpson College came out firing and shocked NWU with a goal in the first minute of the match. That would be the only goal for either team in the first half as the Storm led NWU 1-0 at intermission.
Although they were playing their fourth game in the past five days, NWU came out strong in the second half. Right away the Prairie Wolves got on the board as
Will Weber scored on an indirect free kick from within five yards of the goal as he got it past the Storm line of defense.
Weber gave NWU the lead with his second goal of the night scoring off a throw in from
Jake Kennedy. Two minutes later, Kennedy had another solid thrown in and
Drew Miller put the ball in the net to make the score 3-1.
Simpson pulled within one goal in the 70th minute as Cody Jacobson scored off a corner kick.
With time winding down in the second half, NWU added an insurance goal as Miller struck again. This time he scored on a deflection from a shot by Kennedy.
A victory in a hard fought game between two top level teams will give NWU more confidence as they get ready to begin conference play. The Prairie Wolves have one more non-league game at Wartburg on Sept. 20 before beginning GPAC play.
