FREMONT, Neb. -- Nebraska Wesleyan had several chances to extend their season but couldn't come up with the big hit as Midland University knocked off the Prairie Wolves 4-1 on day two of the 2015 GPAC Postseason Softball Tournament that was played at Christensen Field in Fremont, Neb.
NWU left 13 runners stranded on base and couldn't take advantage of eight walks by the Midland pitcher as the Prairie Wolves mustered up only three hits on the day. Nebraska Wesleyan left at least two runners on base in four of the seven innings, while the Warriors had only four left on.
In the top of the 3rd inning, the Prairie Wolves got on the board first.Â
Rachel Kubik hit a single down the right field line and moved up to second base after
Madi Francis walked. Both runners moved up on a fielder's choice bringing up Mady Ethen with two outs. Ethen hit a soft liner toward the second base bag that was not fielded for the crucial run scoring hit.
The Prairie Wolves held the 1-0 lead heading to the bottom of the 4th when Midland came up with clutch plays. A lead off double started the offense then she moved to third on a fly out. The next batter hit a slow roller to the NWU second baseman who tried to throw out the runner coming home but the runner beat out the throw to tie the game. A single put two runners on with one out when the Warriors took advantage of a dropped fly ball to load the bases. Up came Kortney Wallick who laced a 3-run double to left center giving the Warriors the 4-1 lead.
Nebraska Wesleyan had runners on third base in both the 4th and 6th innings but couldn't drive them in as they saw the season come to an end.
Marisa Garver took the loss going 3 1/3 innings allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits.Â
LeighAnn Novotny pitched the final 2 2/3 and gave up just one hit.
Kubik, Francis and Ethen each had singles for NWU as they got three hits in the loss and only five total hits in the two GPAC Tournament losses.
Nebraska Wesleyan, which loses just two seniors to graduation, finished the 2015 season with a 19-22 overall record.
