Lancers Spoil Senior Day for NWU Baseball

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A 2-run HR in the top of the 8th inning gave Mount Marty a 5-3 extra innings victory in game one of a GPAC Baseball doubleheader to spoil Nebraska Wesleyan's Senior Day on Tuesday afternoon (April 21).  NWU was shutout in the second game as the Lancers won 7-0.

The loss drops the Prairie Wolves to 6-10 in GPAC play and puts NWU now in a tie for 10th place in the league standings.  The top eight teams make the GPAC Postseason Tournament.  Two doubleheaders remain for the Prairie Wolves in the 2015 season as they fight for a postseason spot this week.

NWU trailed 3-0 after three innings in the opening game.  The Prairie Wolves finally got on the board in the 4th inning as Colby McPike led off with a single.  He would come around to score on a pinch hit RBI single by Joe Babic.

Still trailing by two runs headed to the bottom of the 6th, the Prairie Wolves got the bats going.  Three straight singles to begin the inning loaded the bases with no outs.  Chase Powers hit into a fielder's choice to bring in the first run of the inning.  With two outs, pinch hitter Matt Orozco lined a shot to right field to drive in Babic with the tying run.  NWU had the go-ahead run at third base, but pinch hitter John Babic grounded out to the pitcher.

Neither team scored in the 7th inning sending the game to extra innings.  Derrick Nelson led off the 8th with a double to right field.  Bryton Carlson then came up and sent a drive over the left field fence for a 2-run home run.  Carlson then retired the side on the mound in the 8th as he got the game-winning hit and the pitching victory.

Matt Schommer took the loss on SR day for NWU as he allowed five runs and 10 hits in 7+ innings of work.  He struck out four and walked none in his final home start.  Jordan Watteyne led the NWU offense going 3-4 with a double.  Joe Babic had two hits off the bench.

In the second game it was a pitchers dual as the game was scoreless through three innings.  Mount Marty got on the board in the 4th inning with a run on two singles.  The Lancers then exploded for five runs in the 5th inning as they knocked out NWU starter Nolan Lott.

NWU was unable to get their offense going in the second game as Mount Marty pitcher Dustin Haffeman pitched the complete game shutout allowing just six hits with five strikeouts.

The Prairie Wolves got two hits from Sam Ayars and four other players hit singles as NWU did not get an extra base hit.
