Softball Goes 0-4 on Trip To Kansas

OTTAWA, Kan. -- Nebraska Wesleyan dropped all four games on a weekend softball trip to Kansas as the Prairie Wolves fell to Saint Mary and Ottawa on March 13-14.

NWU opened the trip with losses by scores of 8-6 and 5-3 at Saint Mary in Leavenworth, Kan., then closed the trip with a 10-5 and 6-0 setbacks at Ottawa University in Ottawa, Kan.  The Prairie Wolves fall to 0-6 on the season and have now lost 13 straight games dating back to the end of 2014.

On Friday afternoon at Saint Mary the Prairie Wolves got on the board early leading 2-0 in the 1st inning with Madison Ethen and Nicole Vana each getting RBI singles.  That lead held up until the 3rd inning when the Spires plated three runs.  They went up 5-2 with two more in the bottom of the 4th inning.

NWU closed the gap to 5-4 with two runs in the top of the 5th inning.  Rachel Kubik hit a 2-run double for the big hit of the inning.  Saint Mary responded with three in their half of the inning and went on to the 8-6 win.

Kubik was 2-3 with 3 RBI to lead the NWU offense.  Ethen also had two hits with a double and RBI.

The Spires struck early in the second game of the afternoon with two unearned runs in the bottom of the 1st.  NWU cut the lead in half in the 3rd inning as Brittany Gentry had an RBI single to make the score 2-1.  The Spires hit a solo HR in the home half of the inning to extend their lead then added two in the 5th for a 5-1 advantage.

The Prairie Wolves tried to the cut the lead down late in the game as Brianne Conover hit a pinch hit 2-run home run in the 6th inning making the score 5-3.  That is as close as they could get.

LeighAnn Novotny took the loss on the mound allowing six hits, five runs (three earned) in six innings of work.  Brittany Gentry and Madi Francis both had two hits in the game for the Prairie Wolves.

Nebraska Wesleyan had their best offensive output of the season in the first meeting at Ottawa University on Saturday.  The Prairie Wolves had 12 total hits, but dug themselves too big a hole to overcome.

Ottawa jumped out to a five run lead after three innings as they hit two home runs in the third inning.  NWU finally got on the board in the 5th inning with a pair of runs.  Nicole Vana hit an RBI double and Rachel Kubik added an RBI single.

The Braves plated four more runs in the 5th to extend their advantage to seven runs.  NWU chipped away with three runs in the 6th inning but the lead was too much to overcome.

Vana was a perfect 4-4 at the plate with a double and two RBI.  Kubik and Gentry both had two hits for the Prairie Wolves.  Megan Cottier took the loss allowing seven hits and five runs in three innings.

Both the NWU offense and defense let the team down in the final game of the trip.  The Prairie Wolves had just three total hits, while committing four errors in the contest.

Ottawa went up 3-0 after two innings and cruised the rest of the way for the 6-0 win.  Kubik was 2-2 and Gentry had the other NWU hit.

Marisa Garver took the loss allowing six runs (two earned) in four innings.
