Big Win for NWU Men To Open 27th Annual Snyder Classic

LINCOLN, Neb. -- Trey Bardsley set a new scoring record for points in a Snyder Classic game as he scored 36 points to lead Nebraska Wesleyan past Dubuque University 101-88 on day one of the 27th Annual Snyder Classic Friday night (Nov. 27).

Dubuque was the preseason favorite to win the 2016 IIAC Conference, the league the Prairie Wolves will join next season.  NWU has now knocked off the top two teams in the IIAC preseason poll and will face another IIAC team, Central College, tomorrow night.

Nebraska Wesleyan jumped out to an early lead over the Spartans (2-3) and held the lead for the first ten minutes of the game.  Dubuque then got their first lead of the game at the 10:06 mark on a 3-pointer by Andre Norris to take a 27-26 leads.  The two teams exchanged leads the next four minutes then the Spartans got up by as many as six points.

With NWU trailing by six, the Prairie Wolves would end the half on a 16-5 run to build up a 50-45 halftime lead.  Bardsley scored nine points during that stretch of play.

Dubuque would regain the lead once in the second half as they got ahead 52-50 after scoring the first seven points of the second half.  NWU then went on a run of their own to go up 73-64 with 13:08 to lead.  NWU would get up by as many as 13 points in the second half and held on for the double digit victory.

Bardsley scored 36 points to snap the record for points in a Snyder Classic game that was previously held by Javan Pierce of Hastings College in 1997.  He finished his night making 6-12 from 3-point range and 6-7 at the free throw line.

For the third time this season, NWU had two players score over 30 points in the same game. Travis Giesselmann recorded his second straight double-double of 30 points and 12 rebounds.  Giesselmann knocked down 4-10 from 3-point range.  Also scoring in double figures was Cooper Cook who came off the bench to score 11 points.

NWU went over the 100-point mark for the fifth straight time and the 15th time in 32 games under Coach Wellman.

Dubuque shot 54.7 percent for the game and had five players score in double figures.  Two players had double-doubles with Andre Norris scoring 21 points with 13 rebounds and Jake Weber putting up 17 points with 10 boards.

In the first game of the Snyder Classic, Central College defeated Greenville 122-93.  NWU will host Central on Saturday at 7:30, with Dubuque and Greenville playing at 5:30 pm.
