3-Point Shootout in 125-102 loss to Dakota Wesleyan

LINCOLN, Neb. -- #24 Dakota Wesleyan and Nebraska Wesleyan combined to make 39 3-pointers in a fast paced shootout that saw the Tigers defeat the Prairie Wolves 125-102 in the home opener for the NWU men's basketball team on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 21) at Snyder Arena.

DWU shot 61.8 percent from 3-point range, making 21-34 from beyond the arc with seven different Tigers connected from deep.  NWU was nearly as effective making 18-34 on 3-pointers in the game.

Trae Bergh was the story of the game as he poured in 45 points, making 12-18 for 3-pointers.  Both of those totals are records for an NWU opponent.

NWU and DWU each came into the contest with back-to-back 100-point performances and the two teams continued to put on the scoring display on Saturday afternoon.

The 24th-ranked Tigers jumped out to a 13-3 lead before fans had settled down in their seats.  They would maintain the lead the rest of the way as the Prairie Wolves trailed the entire contest.

NWU cut the lead down to three points early in the half and had it to five points with just under five minutes before intermission.  The Tigers then stormed out on a 14-1 run to get up by 18 points with 1:08 left before half.  Trey Bardsley then took over the game and in a flurry scored eight points in less than 40 seconds to make the score 59-49 at halftime.

In the second half, DWU maintained the double digit lead the entire way and got up by 19 with just under 11 minutes remaining.  NWU made one final push and cut the score to 109-99 on a layup by Bardsley with 5:23 remaining.  NWU scored only three points the rest of the way as DWU improved to 6-2 on the season.

Bergh was nearly unstoppable from behind the arc for a while on his way to 45 points.  He finished 12-18 from 3-point range, 14-20 overall and 5-7 at the free throw line on the night.

It was anything but a one-man show for the Tigers.  Jade Miller scored 30 points on 13-18 shooting as five total players reached double figures.

DWU shot 62.2 percent from the field for the game and 21-34 from long range, missing just five 3-pointers in the second half.

Nebraska Wesleyan had a strong offensive night of their own reaching 100 points for the third straight game.  The Prairie Wolves shot 55.7 percent from the floor and 52.9 from 3-point (18-34) land.

Trey Bardsley and Travis Giesselmann combined to score over half of the team's points.  Bardsley finished with 32 points, making 6-10 from 3-point range.  He also dished out a team-high seven assists.  Giesselmann was 6-12 from 3-point land and had 31 points marking the second time this year both players topped 30 points in the same game.

Cooper Cook came off the bench to score 13 points with three 3-pointers and Keithan Karn scored 11.

NWU will be right back in action on Tuesday night as they host Midland University. The Prairie Wolves play four home games in a one-week stretch.
