LINCOLN, Neb. -- With just 0:10 remaining in overtime, Derick Sackey scored the game-winning goal to give Dordt College a 3-2 overtime victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in GPAC men's soccer action Saturday night (Nov. 1) at Abel Stadium.
Dordt forced the match into overtime as Mason Davis scored with just four minutes remaining in regulation to tie the score at 2-2.
Nebraska Wesleyan got on the board first as
Wesley Smith scored a deflected goal in the 14th minute to put the Prairie Wolves ahead 1-0. That score stood up the rest of the first half as NWU led 1-0 at intermission.
The Prairie Wolves extended the lead to 2-0 as
Brady Blazek scored in the 50th minute as he broke free after a field long lead pass and buried the ball in the back of the net.
Less than one minute later, the Defenders got on the board as Sackey scored the first of his two goals on the night. Sackey scored on a penalty kick to make the score 2-1.
It looked like that score would hold up as NWU was fending off several late attempts by Dordt, but finally Mason Davis got the ball in goal at the 86:00 mark to tie the game and force overtime.
As time ticked away in overtime, Sackey sent a hard shot to the top left corner of the goal for the game-winner.
Nebraska Wesleyan finishes the 2014 season with a 7-9-1 overall record and a 3-6-1 mark in GPAC play.
