CRETE, Neb. -- Luis Castaneda scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in overtime to lift Doane College to a 2-1 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan in a GPAC men's soccer match played Wednesday night (Oct. 1) in Crete, Neb.
With the win, Doane earns their first victory of the season as they improve to 1-7-1 overall and 1-2 in GPAC play, while NWU falls to 4-5 and 1-2 in conference action.
It looked good early for Nebraska Wesleyan as
Drew Miller scored his second goal of the season in the 19th minute off an assist from
Brady Blazek to put the Prairie Wolves ahead 1-0.
Doane responded later in the half as Chris Watson was able to convert a penalty kick to tie the match at 1-1 heading to intermission.
In the second half, NWU was forced to play with just 10 players for the final 35 minutes of the half as a red card removed one of the Prairie Wolves. Despite being out shot 17-6 for the match, NWU was able to keep Doane from scoring a goal.
During the overtime period, Castaneda got an assist from Isaac Beber to score the game-winning goal with 2:54 remaining giving the Tigers their first victory of the year.
NWU will try to bounce back this Saturday as they travel to Orange City, Iowa to face Northwestern College.
