Cam Schuknecht completed his seventh season as Nebraska Wesleyan’s head basketball coach and ninth season with the program. He was the assistant coach for the Prairie Wolves for two seasons before taking over as the head coach prior to the 2006-07 season.
NWU finished the 2012-13 season with an overall record of 13-12, the highest win total since the 2007-08 season. NWU led the conference in scoring defense (67.85ppg), field goal percentage defense (43%), and 3 pt field goal percentage defense (31%). NWU ranked in the top 30 nationally in the following statistical categories: assist/turnover ratio (8th), 3pt field goal percentage defense (19th), scoring defense (20th), 3pt field goal percentage (21st), and turnover margin (26th). Nebraska Wesleyan finished the season 5-0 against NCAA Division III competition. Schuknecht currently holds an overall record of 31-20 against NCAA Division III opponents.
During the 2011-12 season, NWU finished 6th in the conference and qualified for the GPAC tournament for the first time in school history (first year of NAIA competition). NWU also finished
4-1 against NCAA Division III opponents. NWU concluded the season ranked 10th nationally in scoring defense allowing 64.15 points per game and 11th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (1.2).
The PrairieWolves have also performed well in the classroom the last two seasons. Two NWU basketball players have been honored as CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-Americans. Andy Schweitzer was named First Team Academic All-American in 2011-12 and Trevor Johnson received Third Team Academic All-America honors in 2012-13.
Before arriving at NWU, Schuknecht served as the assistant men’s basketball coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. In 2002-03, he was an assistant coach at Wartburg College, where he helped the Knights post a 21-7 record. Schuknecht played at Wartburg from 1993-98 and was a two-year co-captain.
After graduation, Schuknecht was hired as an assistant coach at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth, KS, from 1999-2001. In 2000-01, Saint Mary won the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) regular season championship and finished in the Sweet 16 of the national tournament. This was the first conference championship and national tournament appearance in school history. The 2000-01 team ranked as high as #17 nationally. In 2001, he was promoted to head coach and guided the Spires to a third-place finish in the KCAC. His team also received votes in the NAIA national poll for eight consecutive weeks.
Schuknecht received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Wartburg in 1998 and his master’s degree in exercise science from the University of Kansas in 2001.
Schuknecht is married to Sarah Ahrens and they have a son, Garrett.
