Ferguson Named Assistant Cross Country/Track & Field Coach

LINCOLN, Neb. (July 16, 2025) – Nebraska Wesleyan University Director of Cross Country/Track & Field Derrick McKenzie and Head Cross Country Coach Chad Berens have announced the hiring of Wes Ferguson as Assistant Coach for both programs. Ferguson brings elite-level racing experience and championship pedigree to Lincoln, having competed at the 2024 Olympic Trials and captured bronze at the 2025 USA Indoor Championships.

"Coach Berens did an amazing job sifting through applicants and finding the best fit for our program," McKenzie said. "Wes is one of the best runners in the world and we can't wait to have him join our coaching staff. His knowledge of training and how to perform at a high level physically, mentally, and emotionally are going to be a major asset to our team. He will be able to build great relationships along the recruiting trail and I am so excited to watch him begin his career in our program."

Ferguson's credentials speak for themselves. The Fremont native dominated NCAA Division II competition at Nebraska-Kearney, capturing five national championships in the 800 meters and earning nine All-American honors. His 2024 campaign culminated with the USTFCCCA National Track Athlete of the Year award after posting collegiate bests of 1:45.46 in the 800, 1:19.96 in the 600, and 4:03.70 in the mile.

Ferguson's professional resume includes multiple sub-1:46 800-meter performances and a semifinal appearance at the 2024 Olympic Trials in Eugene, Oregon. His versatility across distance events, from the 600 to the mile, brings valuable tactical knowledge to the Prairie Wolf program.

Ferguson graduated from Nebraska-Kearney in May 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management. His academic background, combined with his racing experience, positions him to impact both the competitive and developmental aspects of the program.

The Prairie Wolves open their 2025 cross country season at the Alumni Meet held at Pioneers Park on August 30.
