Derrick McKenzie is in his fifth year as an assistant track & field coach for the Prairie Wolves. He is heavily involved in the recruiting process for the Prairie Wolves track & field program. McKenzie works with the NWU sprinters.
Last season, McKenzie was named the Central Region Women’s Assistant Coach of the Year.
McKenzie, a 2012 graduate of Nebraska Wesleyan, had spent three years as an assistant coach at Omaha North High School. He played a major role in the high level of success that the Omaha North teams enjoyed during his tenure. At the Nebraska State Track & Field Championships the past two years, the Omaha North boys finished 4th and 3rd, with the girls taking home state runner-up and 3rd place finishes.
As a track & field athlete for the Prairie Wolves, McKenzie was a four-year letter winner at NWU. He was a 7-time All-GPAC award winner in track & field and a 2-time NCAA National Qualifier in the 400 hurdles. In 2012 he was a CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 selection and was also a two-time USTFCCCA All-Academic selection.
The Fremont, Neb., native was a 3-time Pflieger-Olson Scholar Athlete and was twice named the NWU Sportsmanship award winner. He served on the Student Athlete Advisory Committee as the track & field representative and served as SAAC president in 2012.
McKenzie joins wife Jackie on the NWU track & field coaching staff.
