Defensive back Pat Sweeney (Lincoln, Neb.) was dominant for the Nebraska Wesleyan football team on and off the field. A four-year letterwinner in the secondary, Sweeney was a two-time 1st-Team Academic All-American.
Sweeney ended his career with 12 total interceptions that ranked him third at the time of his final season in 1988. That mark still ranks in the top ten of the NWU charts today. He recorded six interceptions as a junior in 1987.
In one game against Mid-America Nazarene in 1987, Sweeney picked off three passes and forced a fumble, all of which were game-saving plays in the 7-6 victory. His big game earned him NAIA District 11 Defensive Player-of-the-Week recognition.
As a senior in 1988, Sweeney was named 2nd-Team All-NIAC. He led the team with 93 total tackles to go along with his four interceptions and four pass breakups. From 1985-88, Sweeney recorded 218 career tackles and 17 pass breakups helping the Plainsmen to two NIAC Championships and the team’s first trip to the NAIA Playoffs in 1988.
