The 2006 Nebraska Wesleyan men’s golf team made history as they brought home NWU’s first ever team national championship in any sport.
 
Under head coach Brett Balak, the 2006 Prairie Wolves wanted to build off their 5^th place national finish the previous season.  They won six team titles during the season, including their third straight Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) championship.  Balak, the Eaton/Golf Pride National Coach of the Year, guided the Prairie Wolves to 12 top five finishes out of 13 meets with more than 20 top 10 individual finishes.
 
NWU and Firethorn Golf Club hosted the NCAA Division III Championships on May 8-11.  After posting an opening round 309, the Prairie Wolves responded with a 289 on day to to close the gap on defending national champion and leader Guilford.  NWU took a four-shot lead heading into the final round after firing a 292 and conquered strong winds on the tournament’s final day to shoot 303, en route to the national championship.  The Prairie Wolves won the meet by 10 strokes and had all five golfers finish in the top 20.
 
Aaron Stockton and Jon Deines paved the way as they both tied for fifth at the national championships, while Travis Davis, Jeff Holm and Travis Lawson all tied for 16^th.  They garnered five individual All-American honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America.  Deines and Stockton were also named to the PING All-Central Region Team.
 
The honors didn’t stop there as all five NWU golfers were named to the All-GPAC Team.  After being ranked since the beginning of the season, the team ended the year ranked No. 1 in the GCAA/Bridgestone Div. III Coaches Poll.
