Murphy ('84) is one of the most successful runners in Plainswoman history, earning three letters in cross country and three letters in track. She was a Division III All-American in cross country, finishing 18th at the 1981 meet. During her track career she set five school records, three indoor records and two outdoor records. In 1982 Murphy set the record for the indoor 1,000 with a time of 2:49.18 and the indoor mile at 5:14.4, which currently ranks second. She still holds the Wesleyan record for the indoor two-mile, which she set in 1983 with a time of 11:02.1. In 1983 she also set the outdoor 3,000 mark at 10:39.3 and in 1982 she set the outdoor 5,000 record with a time of 18:12.4. Both marks currently rank second on the Nebraska Wesleyan charts.
