Nicolai came to Nebraska Wesleyan as a member of the Department of Education in 1966. He became Wesleyan’s faculty athletic representative to the NCAA starting in 1968 and served in that capacity for 21 years. His duties as faculty athletic representative expanded when Wesleyan joined the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in 1970. Nicolai was one of the driving forces in the formation of the conference alliance, serving on the NIAC planning committee and as its first president. After his retirement in 1989, Nicolai has remained a loyal fan of Wesleyan athletics and is currently a member of the Hall of Fame committee.
The “Spirit of the Plainsman” award is one of the most prestigious honors presented by the Nebraska Wesleyan Booster Club.
